Do you wish to purchase a security system for your home? Lots of people do so without taking the time to determine whether or not one is really necessary. Always locking your windows and doors, along with a few other simple steps may be just what you need.
Only give your house key to a professional house cleaner if you trust them. Make sure you know they are legitimate before giving out the key. Check their references fully. If they work through a larger firm, you can check up on the company with your local Better Business Bureau.
Do you keep your dog outside if you leave the home? You could let your dog carry a spare key. Conceal it in the dog’s collar. Your dog is an especially good key hiding spot if he doesn’t react well to strangers, since they won’t approach him, but the key will be there if you need it.
Remove all of the vegetation outside in the hotter months. You risk a house fire if that sits there during the heat of the summer and catches fire. Keeping your plants and bushes trimmed will benefit your family’s safety as well as the appearance of your home.
Use your garage for your car, not just storage. Keeping the car inside is a good way to keep criminals from stealing or harming it. When it is in hiding, people won’t know if you’re home.
Be brave! Talk to the people who live in your neighborhood. Watch their homes and ask them if they’ll watch yours as well. Don’t disregard gossip either. You might hear helpful information, for instance if strangers have been hanging around.
Be sure to secure the skylights to your home. Skylights are a great addition to any home, but they are also tempting entryways for crooks. Skylights need to be installed correctly and safely, with hardware that will keep intruders out.
Hide any valuables in wall spaces. You do not have to cut pieces out of the walls to do this. Take a closer look at your walls and note just how many access points there are already. If you have an electric socket you do not use, hide valuables behind their covers.
Always lock your doors, even if you are just walking down the street. It may be shocking, but many home invasions and burglaries occur by intruders walking through the front door that was left open. It doesn’t take long for a thief to steal thousands of dollars worth of stuff.
Empty Boxes
Whenever you purchase some expensive item, don’t place the empty boxes right outside your home. Burglars pay attention to this, and it will make them want to break in and get the items. Break down the empty boxes whenever possible.
Inquire about various contract lengths which your security company might offer. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. You might pay less each month for longer contracts, but it has its deterrents as well. Short contracts leave you with freedom, but also a larger bill.
You want your blinds and curtains closed if you’re away from your home. When they’re open, it would be easy to see no one is there. If they spot an item they’re interested in, they will most likely try to enter. These should also be kept down while you’re sleeping.
Purchase a timer to put your lights on and off during the day. They will go on when you need them, plus they’ll also go on when you’re not home.
If you have a living room window that faces the street, draw your curtains at night. People who can peek through your windows might find your home inviting. If potential thieves notice any expensive valuables within your home, they might target you. Make sure your valuable items cannot be seen from the outside of your home.
Sliding glass doorways can pose security hazards. They can be unlocked very easily if you shake and lift them. If you do not have a security system hooked up to them, cut a length of pipe to fit in the door channel. This will keep the door closed tight and harder to force open.
Choose some deadbolts with captive keylocks for your home. These devices include a thumb latch so that no one can reach around and open the lock through a broken window nearby. If you are going out, simply lodge the key on the lock.
Avoid leaving toys on your lawn if your kids aren’t out there with them. This will clue the thief in that a woman lives in the house. Homes that have women living there are targeted more since they are more likely to have valuable jewelry than men are.
Make sure you always replace locks when purchasing a home, whether the people you purchased from were lovely or not. Regardless of whether you are renting or buying, you should either re-key the locks yourself, or request that your landlord take care of it for you.
It is possible that you need a home security service or system in your home. Maybe you just need to make a few changes instead. Knowing your options is definitely the first step.
