Take care to protect pricey valuables, such as jewelry, fine art or cash. Secure your home to prevent theft. Read on to find out how to secure your home.
Do you keep your dog outside when you aren’t home? You might consider leaving your spare key with your dog. Attach the key inside their collar and make sure it can’t be seen. Your dog is an especially good key hiding spot if he doesn’t react well to strangers, since they won’t approach him, but the key will be there if you need it.
Spare Key
If you want to have a spare key hidden outside of your home, hide it carefully. Under the doormat or above the door frame are all too common spaces that will be checked first by potential intruders. One good place to hide a spare key is in the collar of a dog that does not take kindly to strangers.
Secure your attached garage. Lots of people are afraid that burglars will be able to break into their garage, which will result in them breaking into the home. Thankfully, you can prevent this. If your garage door happens to lift on a track, using a C-clamp can help. the C-clamp prevents the door from opening if it’s tightened on the track close to the roller.
Motion-sensor lights can alert you of a robbery before it even happens. They will illuminate your property if they sense any movement near your home. These lights will make you aware of, and can also scare off, potential burglars. Replace bulbs regularly and check the sensors once a month.
Alter the combination of the locks in your home. Has a roommate or ex-lover moved out recently? If so, then you need to change out the locks in order to keep you and your home safe. It is pretty cheap and the job won’t take more than a few hours.
Listen to your intuition as to whether your system is being installed by a trustworthy home security company. If you don’t feel comfortable with the technician, don’t allow them access to your home. Do not hesitate to ask for a different person to install the system or even consider hiring a different company. Security is supposed to give you peace of mind after all!
You can hide things in your walls. If you have valuables that are small in size, you may want to hide them within your walls. Just use an unwired electric plug, light switch or phone box. If you haven’t got any plates that are unused, simply install a false switch plate.
Hide valuables in spaces in your walls. You do not have to cut pieces out of the walls to do this. Many spots are already cut that can be used for this purpose. Perhaps you can use an old electricity socket as a place to hide your valuables.
Always lock your house, even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes. Many burglaries happen because the intruders can just walk right inside. It can be a quick job for a burglar to steal items of great value.
Rather than believing that you will never have a burglar break into your home, you should be prepared in case it were to occur. Never live in constant fear, but take precautionary steps. Remember these tips so you can increase the security of your home to protect your family.
