Have you considered installing a security system for your home? More than one consumer has impulse bought in this category. Locking your doors could make a huge difference and could provide the security that you need.
Make sure that you change the locks once you’ve taken possession of the house. You never know how many copies of the keys the previous owners made and handed out. Have a locksmith install a brand new lock. Give a key to someone you trust in case you get locked out.
Don’t give the keys to your home to a professional cleaner unless you trust them completely. Make sure you know they are legitimate before giving out the key. Check the housekeeper’s references very carefully. Call the Better Business Bureau to see if their firm is well-reviewed.
If you will be away from your house for an extended period of time, turn the ringers off for all your phones. If the phone rings when you are away, burglars will know there’s nobody home, making the house vulnerable to a break-in when you are out.
Do not allow anyone you do not know into your home. While their story may seem legit, that doesn’t mean it is true. It’s quite possible that your charming guest is only interested in evaluating the security of your home; if they find it lacking, they may be back later to relieve you of some of your possessions.
Those that live in rural area are not as concerned about having their home invaded as those who are located in the city. People who live in the country may even be more vulnerable because they do not have nearby neighbors. You need to do some research on the areas where you live to get an idea of how frequent break ins are.
Understand certain safety precautions when it comes to having skylights for your home. Skylights are a wonderful addition to any home, but they also tend to be weak spots that intruders take advantage of. The hardware that secures your skylights should be sturdy and durable.
Walls make the perfect hiding spot. Small valuables fit nicely inside walls. You can use the opening provided by an electrical switch plate or other device that is not being used. If you use all of them, you can always have fake ones installed.
Always lock your home, even if you plan on coming back within a few minutes. It may be shocking, but many home invasions and burglaries occur by intruders walking through the front door that was left open. They can get a ton of stuff quickly and be long gone before you return.
There is a lot of value in copper wiring. Many folks are not aware of this until a thief steals it. Copper, found in many wires, can be removed in little time, and is worth quite a bit of money. Therefore, ensure you hide your wires so that burglars cannot see them, or make the wires extremely hard for the burglars to get to.
Before letting a home security representative inside, ask for identification. You would be surprised how many thieves will impersonate security representatives to get into your house. This is dangerous for your family and your possessions. Be deliberate in preventing hazards.
Check someone’s references carefully before letting them come into your home. Run a criminal background check on them, as well. Anyone you bring into your home to work could be your worst enemy.
Motion Detectors
If you are searching for ways to make your home more secure, one inexpensive way to accomplish this is to purchase exterior lights that have motion detectors. These lights will keep your property well lit and give you a good idea of who approaches your home. Properly-situated motion detectors will give your home a complete field of protection and make it impossible for a miscreant to approach undetected.
A wireless security system could be a good option. Wired systems might be a bit less expensive, but they often involve intrusive rewiring of your home, and can become faulty during a power outage. A wireless system is easy to install, and will not become inoperable if your power goes out.
If you are out of town for awhile, ask a friend to take a look at your door for any fliers. It isn’t uncommon for burglars to put up fliers to see whether or not they’re removed. Fliers that are left behind signal to the burglar that there is no one at home.
Can you locate your house number if you are standing on the street? If you have an emergency, it will be hard for the police to find your house quickly if your numbers are hidden or too small to read. This is a very easy issue to have rectified.
Credit Card
Do not use locks with spring latches. This type of lock is extremely easy to break. Anyone with a credit card can do it. A thief only needs to skip the credit card in between the lock to make it open. IF spring latch locks are already in place, add a deadbolt for that extra layer of security.
When you’re not in your house, all of the window coverings (blinds, curtains, shades, or what have you) should be tightly shut. When they are open, potential burglars get a free look in. If a burglar sees something that is enticing, they are going to try and get it from your home. You should have the windows covered when you’re asleep.
Don’t hide your keys in obvious places. Fake rocks are particularly simple to spot. Anyone looking for your key will look under your doormat. Talk to a neighbor or someone that you know to hold your key. If that isn’t an option, be creative with a hiding spot.
You might need a security system. However, you may find that there are other things you can do to secure your home. Research all of your options to choose the best one.
